Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
New York: Harper, 1943. First edition, twenty-first printing (which Harper confusingly refers to as the "twenty-first edition"). 8vo. Hardcover. 420 pp. Very good condition. Former owner's name on front paste down. Otherwise clean pages. Dust jacket is shabby with the usual creasing, closed-tear patterns on spine. War propaganda--"this Hitler guy is doing terrible things in Europe, especially to us Catholics; the only way to lick him is to buy war bonds, see?" Um, not really--in the form of a story set on the Fourth of July the plot of which centers on the saving of our heroine "Francie" (if you want subtlety then read Hemingway I guess) by the totally not fictitious "widow of slain police officer Betty Smith." (OK, maybe she's a real person who really wrote this book. Anything's possible. Buy it and decide for yourself.)
